Job interviews can be tough; not to mention nerve-wracking, but with the right strategies, you can transform the experience into a stepping stone towards your dream job. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a recent graduate, acing an interview requires a combination of preparation, confidence, and interpersonal skills. Let’s delve into five interview tips that will set you apart and leave a lasting impression on your potential employers.
I’ve interviewed a variety of people in my career and have gone through a variety of interviews myself. Below, I’ll be listing the most important interview tips that will give you the best chance at getting the job you want.
Develop a Friendly Rapport: It’s a Conversation, Not an Interrogation!
A good interview should flow like a good conversation. One thing to always remember is that while they’re interviewing you, you’re interviewing them as well. An interview should give you a good sense of not only the job itself but also the people you work for which can be equally important.
After all, you want to like the people you work for since you’ll be working for them for years to come.
While professionalism is crucial, fostering a friendly relationship with the interviewer can make a significant difference. Incorporate casual conversation into the interview, when appropriate. Discuss shared interests or ask about the interviewer’s experiences within the company. This not only helps ease tension but also makes you more memorable and relatable. A good personality can go a long, long way in getting you hired because quite often, an employer considers fit as much as they consider your skillset.
If you don’t come off as someone they can get along with, or as someone they think will fit on their team, you might just be eliminated even if you think you have all the right skills for the job.
Thorough Research: Know Your Stuff!
Before heading into an interview, make sure you’ve done your homework on the company. Understand its values, mission, and recent achievements. You can often find all that information by spending a bit of time on the company website.
Familiarize yourself with the role you’re applying for, and be ready to demonstrate how your skills align with the company’s needs. Being well-informed shows your genuine interest in the position and the organization. Asking questions about the role, the interviewers experience within the company and you’ll set yourself apart from the many interviewees who just show up, answer questions and don’t ask any of their own.
Plus asking questions about the company, the role and the person interviewing you is a great way to get a nice conversation going.
Highlight Your Achievements: Tell Your Story!
Don’t just list your qualifications; narrate your professional journey. Share specific examples of your achievements and how you’ve contributed to your previous roles.
Before you go think of examples of tasks you’ve completed that relate to the job and the results they garnered. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers. What was the situation, what did you do and how did that benefit your manager or prior company?
Remember to tie this into your conversational tone. One example to do that is the common question “tell me about yourself.” Often people respond to that with just a boring listing of their career progress but that’s also the perfect ability to not only talk about your latest job and what you’ve done successfully there but also to introduce your personality and things you like.
By telling your story, you make a memorable impact and showcase your abilities in a relatable way.
Show Enthusiasm and Positivity: Smile Through the Screen!
A positive attitude goes a long way in making a lasting impression. Smile, maintain eye contact, and exude enthusiasm throughout the interview. Again, Employers not only assess your skills but also your cultural fit within the team. A positive demeanor demonstrates your ability to thrive in a collaborative and energetic work environment.
You can see the focus on fit with a lot of these questions and how these tips can relate to each other. At the end of the day, you want to make sure you’re showing your personality as much as you can even if you’re discussing technical topics.
The company may be interviewing dozens of people for this role and you want to make sure your interview is memorable. Often, a good personality with a positive attitude will make you stand out from the others. If you and another person have similar technical skills but one of you have a better personality and connected with the manager on a personal level, who do you think they’ll hire?
Prepare Thoughtful Questions: It’s a Two-Way Street!
An interview is not just an opportunity for the employer to evaluate you; it’s also your chance to assess whether the company aligns with your goals and values. Prepare thoughtful questions about the company culture, team dynamics, and growth opportunities. This demonstrates your genuine interest in the role and your commitment to making informed decisions about your career.
Once you learn more about the person you’re interviewing, ask them about their experience within the company. Again, it’s not only an interview for them but also for you. Their answers will allow you to gleam more about the company than you could get anywhere else since it’ll be a direct experience on the team you’re working on.
Putting These Interview Tips to Practice
Just like with any skill, becoming good at interviews takes practice. These interview tips will help but nerves can still get the best of you at times.
You’ve probably noticed that many of these tips focus on the tone and friendliness of the interview. In essence, that’s the goal, a good interview shouldn’t feel like a drag. It should flow well, be conversational and even be enjoyable.
One way to get there is to practice your interview and these interview tips with a friend or family member. Have them sit down and ask you questions from a list of interview questions and give you feedback on your responses. I know something like that can be awkward but if you can’t get over that then how will you get over the awkwardness of an interview?
Once you get past that, just getting out there and interviewing for jobs you may not even fully want helps you prepare for future interviews when jobs that you’re very interested in arise. It’s very important to note that interviewers are judging fit as much as skillset and showing them that you’re comfortable during your interview can put you ahead of most others when it comes to landing your dream job.
Mastering the interview process involves a combination of preparation, presentation, and connection. By conducting thorough research, highlighting your achievements, maintaining a positive attitude, asking thoughtful questions, and developing a friendly rapport, you position yourself as a standout candidate. Remember, an interview is not just about proving your skills; it’s about showcasing your personality and potential fit within the company culture. Approach each interview with confidence and authenticity, and you’ll be well on your way to landing that dream job.
